What are the Top 2015 travel destinations? I don’t know

I used to regularly make Top 10 travel lists for each new year.  Sometimes I still contribute (like this bid for Oklahoma City). I always try to do a good job, and pick places that I think are due notice for a year.

But the reality is that I don’t know who you are, I don’t know where you’re based, I don’t know how much money you can spend, or how many days you can get away, and I also don’t know where you’ve been.

But my video “producers” forced me to come up with a Top 3 anyway (which is, according to Gadling, “a more interesting approach“).

Top3

But if you want my actual advice, specific to what you’re looking for given your time or budget, let me know in comments here, and I’ll try. (Because #Roberthelps.)

Meanwhile, all those lists are fine. But I do get a little exasperated by them at times. (Enough so, that last year I dissected Top Destinations lists for Skift.)

Then again, maybe exasperated is a good thing?

The top destinations are were you want to go, in my not so humble opinion. All the rest is commercial PR or hipster posting. I know some places I go are guaranteed good times and fascinating to me, but are they “interesting” enough to one-up everyone else making a list? I could care less. All this competitive stuff goes counter to the idea of travel as a physical and imaginative act that is enjoyable, as far as I am concerned. Like any great great photographer, you can make any subject a great photo.

Glad you took the humble route. As a traveller based in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico which I love, I am always amazed by all the ¨Best Place in the World¨ hooplah. It really does depend on answers to those questions.

Thanks for the comments. I think making the lists are fair enough. Though if you go back, you see more and more blogs/media companies making them for obvious reasons: they get a lot of attention.

Sometimes I think the best answer is to report real trends. If a Trip Advisor or Lonely Planet or National Geographic can demonstrate what off-the-radar places have spiked the most recently — based on clicks/searches/purchases — I’d be interested in seeing it.

At the same time, SOME places have travel authority — and can shed light of where they think travel will, or should, go in the coming years. And they’re right to do it.

But it doesn’t mean I can’t make a little fun of it anyway.

I JUST WAS IN THE UPPER MICHIGAN PENINSULA!!! THIS IS GARBAGE!!!

I was actually joking, and pressing ‘return’ posted my comment. So sorry about that.

You make great points. Thinking back to where I wanted to go, I always wanted to go to England, to the home of Monty Python. That was my goal, and I haven’t taken it seriously enough.

And yes, I was in the upper peninsula, in the Soo, and it was great. Thanks for the video. Loved it.

(seriously, I was joking above. sorry it posted before I put the rest of this in.)
