Transport to Bac Ha exists (a bouncing Lao Cai–Bac Ha bus goes a couple times daily), but isn’t always easy to track down. You can rent a motorbike in Sapa or at the cafes near the Lao Cai train station (I got one at Thach Quynh Café – to the left as you exit the train station – for US$6.50; friendly folks there, but unfortunately the Honda I got broke on the mountain trails, leaving me stranded for half a day.)

From Lao Cai, take Nguyen Hue St north from the train station to near the Chinese border, then turn right onto Hwy 70 (a sign points to Hanoi). The turn off to Bac Ha is clearly signed, 39km south of Lao Cai. The road up to Bac Ha weaves past villages and up and up to Bac Ha, another 25km or so. Lovely.

You can rent a motorbike in Bac Ha for US$7 per day.
