MEDITERRANEO
Home to Hanoi’s best pizza, this two-floor spot – run by an Italian chef – is a comfortable place with terra-cotta floors, nautical artwork and Italian maps on the walls. In addition to the very good ‘wood-oven pizzas’ (one person can handle a large; US$5.60-7.50), there’s homemade pastas (from US$7.50). If weather’s nice, go up to the two-table balcony, or sit in the main room and look over ‘boutique street’ action.

PARIS DELI
Pleasant French-style bakery is best for snacks or the set breakfasts.

PEPPERONIS
You can’t brag about its authenticity, but there’s no denying the healing powers of the second-floor air-con on a hot day, or the sidewalk seats of this pasta/pizza/burger spot that puts the ‘Murican in American. Pepps is fond of its all-you-can-eat pasta/salad lunch buffets (US$2) and pizza buffets (US$3.75) on Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights from 6-9pm. I’m not. I prefer a-la-carte orders: burgers are US$1.80, small pizzas start at US$3.75. Tap beer is US$0.65.

FANNY’S ICE CREAM
Facing Hoan Kiem Lake from a French-era villa, Franny’s is Hanoi’s best ice cream, with many local flavors (like ginger and jackfruit).
