ACCOMMODATIONS - Road to Beach

Return to ACCOMMODATIONS home

Many tour groups end up on this busy 4km road between Hoi An town and Cua Dai beach – and many travelers swear by the hotels here. There are certainly a growing number of choices (mostly mid-range). Conditions can be good, but the location isn’t exactly ideal. Unlike the other choices, you’re neither here nor there (beach nor town), and anywhere you go will require getting out on the busy, rather unappealing road.

HOI AN RIVERSIDE RESORT
Just off Cua Dai Rd, a 1km walk from the beach, this villa-style, 62-room hotel is a stand-out for its laid-back vibe along the river. Many rooms look over the nice pool, or better yet, the river just behind. Rooms are decked in traditional styles with bamboo (‘Japanese’) or wood (‘Vietnamese’) floors. I particularly liked the river-view superior, with windows looking two directions out, a writing desk, and a back patio. The hotel runs five daily shuttles to/from the beach or Hoi An town – or you can rent bikes. Free WiFi in the lobby. The frequent promotions drop rates to US$70 per room – that should excuse the cheesy, unmute-able piano music on its website.
Tel 0510-864-800; www.hoianriverresort.com, [email protected]; 175 Cua Dai Rd; standard/superior/deluxe rack rates US$139/159/210 (about 50% less during summer promotions)

PHUOC AN RIVER HOTEL
New to the frenzy in 2007, this 54-room mid-ranger is a pleasant place with field/river views with pleasant décor (fish tanks in some rooms!) and situated a short walk from the beach. There’s a pool and spa, plus the free breakfast is served – with water-buffalo views – in the top floor.

ANCIENT HOUSE RESORT
About half way between town and the beach, the Ancient House is a peaceful collection of (modern) villas that turns its back on the dusty road. Interesting sculptures line the open walkways winding past the great pool and the white buildings, with four classes of rooms. The all-white theme runs inside-and-out – sort of Greek Islands if you squint – but I found some rooms a bit dark nevertheless, and a couple a little musty until the AC got going. Born in 2004, the Ancient has won many fans – some of whom check in on group tours. Free shuttle to beach/town.

HOI AN BEACH RESORT
This pricey-for-what-you-get 110-room resort of villa-style rooms is OK enough, even if it lacks a little style in the rooms – and oh, a beach. That’s across the road. Their other location in town – with US$60 rooms – is probably a better deal, though both get just enough wrong that I’d give it a pass.
