MY THO - Basics

Arriving
The bus station is a few miles west of the center, reach via Nguyen Trai St, then right (south) on Nam Ky Khoi Nghia St, which ends on 30 Thang 4 St, which runs east-west along the Tien Giang River. The center is at the southeast end of 30 Thang 4 St, beginning a block east of Nam Ky Khoi Nghia St, finishing on Trung Tac St which runs north on the west side of the Bao Dinh Canal – after several blocks, Trung Tac St reaches My Tho’s main market.

The nearest Highway 1 location to the center is outside Trung Luong restaurant, by the traffic circle about a mile north of the bus station. I got a Honda taxi to take me to the center for 2000D.

Tours
The guidebooks still say so, but TIEN GIANG TOURIST (Cong Ty Du Lich Tien Giang; tel 073-873-184; www.tiengiangtourist.com; 30 Thang 4 No 8; open 7am-5pm), the state tourist office for the province, no longer controls the boat-trip racket. Now teams of boat-trip entrepreneurs will jockey for trips the second you arrive. If you drop by Tien Giang, you’re assured an English-speaking guide. They have three trips, mostly in cahoots with Saigon group tours. Debatably their ‘number three’ trip – to Ben Tre’s coconut and honey farms, with a rowboat and horse-carriage ride and stop by at Turtle Island – is the most unique. You can arrange it on your own for $24.50 for one person, $27 for two, $32 for four.

The private boat-trip touts will find you, and offer trips for as little as $15 before negotiating. Also, Chuong Duong Hotel has its own tourist office.

Internet & ATMs
You can find Internet on Nam Ky Khoi Nghia and at the post office, opposite the Huong Duong hotel on 30 Thang 4 St. There’s also a 24-hour ATM at the latter location.
