My Tho’s nicest hotel, on the riverside and with all its 25 clean rooms overlooking water traffic, is better than your average Mekong sleep. As elsewhere, ‘high end’ means a thin layer of carpet over the tile floor. Out back is a private promenade closed off from the public. The hotel restaurant is of the nicest in My Tho center. Breakfast is extra. No Internet. There are bigger $35 suites too.

This simple budget place, a block north of the promenade but alongside a nice canal, looks a bit better from outside than in – with terraces accessing the rooms, which look over the busy river scene. Inside, the rooms are clean but old – with a sad fluorescent bulb on the wall and a quite last-century bathroom. A fine choice if you’re looking to save and be in the center. Limited English. Staff rent bikes. The lift begins one flight up.
