HA TIEN - Accommodations

The style-sensitive won’t find chocolates on the pillows in Ha Tien – nearby Hon Chong is better for that – but there are a few fine hotels.

HOANG DU HOTEL
Never has tile glistened like it does at this family-style, five-floor mini-hotel. Everything is spic-and-span in the 18 rooms with cartoon bedspreads (eg ‘Goofy’) and prints of tigers on the mint-blue walls. One-bed rooms are 150,000D for one or two people, two-bed rooms for three or four are 200,000D and 220,000D. Next time I’m in Ha Tien, I’ll head here. A block northwest from the main market area.
Tel 077-851-463; 30 Lam Son; rooms 150,000-220,000D

HAI VAN HOTEL
Friendly, pink, two-part hotel with sweet, but non-English speaking staff, and a couple motorcycle guys around who speak English and offer good-value bike/motorbike rentals and guided trips. The older complex has two sets of rooms – the cheaper (70,000D with fan, 120,000D if you turn on the AC) is a bit boxy but clean and has no windows; the slightly bigger one (150,000D) has AC, and a window or two. The newer (and just as pink) wing is probably where you’d want to put mom up. It’s the same clean blue tiles, but little extras like Ha Tien photos on the walls and balconies and a lift make it of the nicest places in town; a room for one/two people is 200,000/250,000D. Hai Van’s restaurant – with staff wide-eyed at foreigners – is by the pontoon bridge, a few blocks away.
Tel 077-852-872; 55 Lam Son St; rooms 70,000-250,000D

DU HUNG HOTEL
A fine back-up for a $10 room. On the main strip, right on the water. One receptionist (at least) speaks English, a rarity in Ha Tien.
Tel 077-951-555; [email protected]; 17A Tran Hau; rooms 160,000D

No!
HA TIEN HOTEL
On the main strip, and supposedly the finest in town, the 32-room Ha Tien creates ‘luxury’ with gray carpet and a bit over-perfumed rooms. There’s little here to suggest anything other than OK roadside motel outside Cleveland. Not worth the doubled price.
Tel 077-952-093; 36 Tran Hau; rooms 300,000D
